Transoral robotic surgery for the excision of base of tongue vascular lesions.

چکیده
Vascular lesions of the oropharynx may impair swallowing and breathing functions, bleed repeatedly, or cause airway compromise. Conservative management with steroids, interferon, or propranolol may be attempted, but surgery is often needed. Surgical approaches traditionally involved open procedures; however, with the growth of transoral robotic surgery, a new approach is available. This report describes how transoral robotic surgery can be used in a safe manner to resect base of tongue (BOT) vascular lesions with minimal morbidity. Institutional review board research ethics approval was granted by the Ohio State University Office of Responsible Research Practices (OSU-07061).

Polymorphous Low-Grade Adenocarcinoma of the Tongue Base Treated by Transoral Robotic Surgery
Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma is a rare malignancy arising from the minor salivary glands in the aerodigestive system, most frequently the hard palate. The treatment of choice is wide surgical resection, and the efficacy of radiotherapy has not been confirmed. A 54-year-old male presenting with a mass at the base of the tongue performed transoral laser microsurgery. The pathologic diagn...
متن کاملTransoral Resection of Giant Parapharyngeal Space Tumors via a Combined Surgical Approach
Introduction: Parapharyngeal space (PPS) tumors account for 0.5% of the head and neck neoplasms. Based on the evidence, 80% of these tumors are of a benign nature. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for this condition. The present study was conducted to propose transoral resection as an efficient way to excise the benign well-defined tumors of the PPS. Materials and Methods: Thi...
متن کاملTransoral robotic surgery (TORS) for base of tongue neoplasms.
OBJECTIVE To develop a minimally invasive surgical technique for the treatment of base of tongue neoplasms using the optical and technical advantages of robotic surgical instrumentation. STUDY DESIGN Ten experimental procedures including tongue base exposure and dissections were performed on three cadavers and two mongrel dogs. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) was then performed on three huma...

IMPORTANCE This study investigates the effectiveness of combined palatal surgery and transoral robotic surgical (TORS) tongue base reduction with partial epiglottidectomy in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in an Asian context. To our knowledge, this is the first report on TORS for OSA in Asian patients in the literature. OBJECTIVE To report our preliminary experience with combi...
متن کاملA new paradigm for the diagnosis and management of unknown primary tumors of the head and neck: a role for transoral robotic surgery.
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS In 2% to 3% of patients with cancer metastatic to cervical lymph nodes, a primary tumor will not be found despite exhaustive diagnostic efforts. The treatment for these patients includes cervical lymphadenectomy followed by radiation to areas with increased risk of harboring a mucosal primary. Wide-field radiation therapy increases the incidence of xerostomia and dysphagia...
